Why men prefer country girls
FAB Five’s 1980s hit Jamaican Woman complimented all types of Jamaican women without offending any in particular, but certain distinctions were made between the ‘country’ and ‘town’ women, distinctions that many Jamaican men still use as reference when stating preferences in their mates. The song states that ‘Kingston woman love everything; them love excitement and love to swing’, and St Andrew women seem quite volatile, ‘leave them man alone or them will make you run’. On the other hand, ‘Portland woman can sport fi true; but treat them good an’ them will die for you’, and ‘St Elizabeth woman pretty fi true, but as you talk to them them waan married to you’, showing that these types of women espouse certain values of commitment.
Rural-grown women have been said to have a certain warmth and kindness, are less materialistic, and are more likely to be better mothers and home-makers, while city girls are independent, confident and self-aware. But do men still consider geography when choosing their partners?
Ian:
Well, in my opinion, country girls are better because they’re more decent and I’m comparing the raunchy town girls to the average country girls. Town girls nowadays are raunchy while country girls are more ambitious. I would also say that town girls are more violent, more promiscuous, and more deformed as it relates to their skin — too much bleaching. Also, country girls can cook better because they spend more time around older family members cooking good-quality food.
Jerome:
A woman is a woman is a woman. However, I will say this, girls from the city are taught differently from girls in the country. They are not generally taught the importance of caring for the home, preparing meals and child-rearing unless they have a mother who still has her rural roots intact. City girls are also usually more conscious about hair and nails, eyebrows needing waxing, and wondering how many pounds of make-up they need to wear. On the flip side, we have women in the country who are more likely to have grown up understanding that less is more, that the world does not revolve around them, and that family is also very important. They’re respectful, they know that the way to a man’s heart is through his belly. And rural women, even if less driven, are usually more easily encouraged.
Ricardo:
Well, I am a modern man and I don’t believe anyone is really better than the other, it is really about a man’s tastes. For example, I don’t care too much about what she wears, whether she cooks or not, or whatever else it may be that she needs to get done in the house. I want to know that I have a woman by my side who is forward-thinking and educated enough to help me to make big decisions. I have found that kind of a person in a town girl, so definitely I would say town girls are winning. Nothing taken from country girls, but they are sometimes a little backward and a little hard to tug, so I will just stay where I am — comfortable.
Glen:
For me, country women make better partners because I have experienced both worlds and I think I can say safely that these women are strong, these women are supportive — they are more likely to support you when you are down. I will say this though, the worst kind of woman you will find anywhere is a country rat turned town mouse. They try to hide their roots, become materialistic like many town women, have a ‘conning’ type way about them, don’t really want to settle down and to think about a family, they just want to get there while skipping too many rungs on the ladder. I will take the girls who know how to milk the cows, who are ambitious but too proud of their country to behave like they are some kind of gods, and who will make our home look like just that — a home and not a pigsty.
Carlton:
City girls know what they want, they are go-getters, they are more forward-thinking and don’t believe that everything is obeah. They are smart and they are confident. I love the town girls because they know how to get around, they are mentally tougher, and they are more likely to get up when disappointed. Country girls worry too much. City girls also take care of themselves, they make sure that they are well kept and can go to meet people for business, etc. Country girls are good too, but maybe not for me.
