AW Fashion – Walking Dreams by Mercy-Ann Copeland
The winner of season six of the Mission Catwalk Celebrity Edition is Rochele Spencer. With 3-D fabric and designs that represent the future of fashion, her win was, according to those in attendance, predictable.
Copping second place was another Jamaican, notably fashion designer Mercy-Ann Copeland. Copeland who has been designing and showing at fashion shows for over nine years started operating under the name Mercyj in 2014.
Her finale collection labelled Walking Dreams collection was inspired by the women in her family and her own ideas of a dream outfit — “one free of all insecurities, be it size or shape, finances, or the perfect climate”. Her dream outfit which formed part of the collection is a white pantsuit with a trench coat. The 29-year-old released a breath of citrus-fresh air by way of delicate flounces and sharp lines with an interlude of shimmer and gold.
Cool girls wore culottes with balloon sleeves and demure women were covered with impeccable beadwork and embroidery to match. One could imagine Copeland’s mood board from the cut and sew of the pieces: genteel white dresses or neoprene separates that harked back to bygone times. Walking Dreams was interspersed with pops of colour and shimmer, all with an obvious chocolate undertone. It was almost as if she reinvented the colour wheel, leaving only orange, white, and gold — “colours that represent purity, royalty, and vibrancy; qualities the Mercyj woman possess”, she told All Woman: Fashion (AWF).
Copeland’s true passion is bridal wear and her goal is to open her own bridal boutique. Until that dream materialises, AWF delights in sharing Mercyj Fashions.
