4 baby items you probably should rethink
1. Newborn diapers
The packaging will say these will fit babies up to 10 pounds, but for our moms, buying too many newborn diapers was a bad investment. The advice:- wait to buy diapers until after the final ultrasound when you will get an idea of baby’s actual weight; this may also indicate whether you’d be better off buying size one diapers. Also, do not buy an entire value-sized box of newborn diapers because baby will be out of them within a couple of weeks. Babies grow rapidly in the first months and you may end up having a lot of waste.
2. Onesies in the hospital
The fresh umbilical stump will mean that you won’t be able to button those cute onesies at the bottom anyway, so you may be better off dressing baby in a T-shirt, or button-up chemise. You also won’t have use for baby tights or shorts for the same reason, so nix that idea of a cute going-home outfit and opt for practicality instead.
3. Expensive barrier creams
A jar of petroleum jelly will often work better than expensive diaper rash ointments at keeping diaper rash at bay. So there’s no need for the zinc-based ointments until your baby actually has a rash.
4. Using rubbing alcohol
The umbilical cord will heal on its own without you applying alcohol to the area. Keeping the area dry and clean will make it heal — probably faster than applying rubbing alcohol. You can, however, use rubbing alcohol to clean things like baby thermometers
