Be intentional

Lichelle Palmer

INTENTIONALITY is the buzzword that’s been making the rounds, with the maiden Day of Intentionality celebrated last week, September 20, and dedicated to encouraging individuals to embrace intentional living.

“Intentionality is where we use the potential of our minds and power of our actions to live a life rooted in joy,” is how it’s explained by founder Isa Watson, who took to social media to announce the launch of the day and its official proclamation — for “using the potential of our minds and the power of our actions to live a life rooted in joy”.

“Intentionality is a lot of small decisions about how we live our life, how we cultivate the energy around us, how we invest in friendships in order to centre our joy. It can be the decision to choose rest, prioritise friendship, get outside and be active everyday. But it’s especially the commitment to choosing to learn what refuels our tank. We cannot continue to operate from E,” the author and entrepreneur said.

How can you take ownership of your “joy journey”?

Here are some tools from life coach and actualisation specialist Yolanda Livingston, as you seek to make the best of the rest of September, and launch towards the last three months of the year.

1. Set boundaries: Learn to say no when necessary and set clear boundaries to protect your time and energy.

2. Nurture relationships: Surround yourself with positive, supportive people who lift you up and make you feel valued and loved.

3. Practise gratitude: Regularly take time to reflect on the things you’re grateful for; it can bring a sense of contentment and joy.

4. Find a hobby: Dedicate time to hobbies or activities that bring you pleasure and a sense of accomplishment.

5. Prioritise your mental health: Take care of your mental well-being through activities like mindfulness, therapy, or journalling.

6. Stay active: Engage in regular physical activity, whether it’s yoga, dancing, or any form of exercise that brings you joy.

7. Seek learning opportunities: Pursue interests or skills that ignite your passion and curiosity.

8. Practise mindfulness: Be present in the moment and appreciate the little things in life.

9. Balance work and personal life: Find a healthy balance between work commitments and personal time.

10. Embrace self-reflection: Take time to reflect on your feelings, goals, and aspirations. This can provide clarity and a sense of purpose.

11. Practise self-compassion: Treat yourself with kindness and understanding, especially during challenging times.

“Remember, prioritising your own happiness and well-being is not selfish — it’s essential for your overall health and the ability to be there for others in a meaningful way,” Livingston said.
