Rene Mitchell, VP-Compliance & Risk, Mayberry Investments Limited
What is one key change you believe needs to happen — whether in the workplace, community, or society — to create real progress for women, and how can you (or have you) contributed to making it happen?
A key change needed to create real progress for women is ensuring equal access to leadership and decision-making roles in the workplace, government, and community organisations. Despite progress, women remain underrepresented globally, holding only 23 per cent of executive roles and 29 per cent of senior management positions. While Jamaica leads in female leadership, challenges persist, particularly at the mid-career level, where maternity leave and caregiving responsibilities often hinder career progression. This contributes to stagnation in female representation in executive roles.
Underrepresentation in policymaking matters because representation drives change. When women hold decision-making power, policies become more inclusive, workplaces more equitable, and economic opportunities expand. Research shows that diverse leadership enhances business performance, fosters innovation, and increases profitability.
To ensure equal opportunity, organisations must actively identify, mentor, and sponsor high-potential women early in their careers. Additionally, flexible work policies — including parental leave, remote work options, and flexible hours — can help women balance professional and family responsibilities while advancing in leadership.
Personally, I have contributed to progress for women by coaching and mentoring young professionals at Mayberry, helping them prepare for leadership roles. I also support female entrepreneurs by raising awareness of investment opportunities, resources, and financial education. Through these efforts, I aim to empower more women to claim their place in leadership and drive meaningful change.
