Real Talk: Unscripted Therapy
Former AW counsellor offers honest and direct advice for real issues couples face in new book
‘DEAR counsellor, I am lonely and depressed, and I just cannot find someone successful, loyal, and who can make me laugh.’ ‘Dear Counsellor, five years ago I met a young man who was five years my junior. I developed a soft spot for him and took him into my home…’ ‘Dear Counsellor, for the past two years my marriage has been going downhill since my husband met this girl at his workplace…’
The letters were poignant and captivating, his advice was always masterful and well-reasoned, and now Wayne Powell, PhD, who for years skilfully helped All Woman readers untangle conflict, make sense of their emotions and behaviour, and learn how to turn misunderstanding into deeper connections, is offering Unscripted Therapy through practical relationship advice on love, boundaries and honest communication in his début publication.
Real Talk: Unscripted Therapy is an engaging collection of responses from the author, a licensed marriage and family therapist, to common challenges that couples may be facing. From fading passion to emotional cheating, the book leaves it all out on the table, offering real advice for real issues, and giving straightforward guidance for handling conflict and deepening connections, empowering readers to redefine their approach to love.
“Relationships go through hill and valley experiences, and couples do have significant challenges navigating the journey,” Powell explained. “Real Talk is unscripted therapy that provides an analytic breakdown of the issues, and offers guidance and direction to the couple to help them make informed decisions about their relationships.”
He said the book is not intended to be a substitute for ongoing professional couples’ therapy, but provides some insights into the issues couples deal with and how the actions or behaviours of one or both partners can damage the fabric of the relationship. It provides clear frameworks to help rebuild trust and improve relationships.
“No doubt you may be able to identify with some of the issues covered in Real Talk and may want to accept the advice, or you may be prompted to reach out to a licensed therapist for professional help,” he added.
Powell, who holds a master’s degree in counselling psychology from the Caribbean Graduate School of Theology and a PhD in marriage and family therapy (couples therapy specialisation) from National University, United States, owns and operates Agape Marriage and Family Therapy LLC.
He resides overseas, and is also a Prepare-Enrich Facilitator, a globally recognised relationship assessment and skill-building programme designed to help couples at any stage. He has been working with couples for over 20 years to help them navigate the inherent challenges that relationships have.
He was the relationship advice columnist for All Woman for nine years, and a relationship expert on radio and television programmes in Jamaica. He has also published articles on relationships in the local newspapers and conducted relationship enhancement workshops.
Published by Newman Springs Publishing, the engaging Real Talk: Unscripted Therapy is inspired by the author’s passion for working with couples who are experiencing challenges in their relationships and need help to restore the love and happiness they once shared. Drawing from his years of professional experiences, Powell’s Real Talk could serve as the catalyst to initiate the therapy process, revealing the real stuff couples are dealing with and providing useful opinions.
The book is available in stores, and online at the Apple iBooks Store, Amazon and Barnes and Noble.
