BMW continues its push to have 25 electrified models by 2025 with the soon-to-be-available 2023 BMW iX1 — an all-electric version of its smallest Sports Activity Vehicle (SAV), the X1.

"This year we will launch several models, including the iX3 and the new X5 50e, and our most powerful M model the XM," Jeanel Bowla, sales manager — BMW Jamaica, told the Jamaica Observer's weekly Auto magazine.

The iX1 comes on the heels of a model refresh moving it into its third generation with a host of new features.

"The model is made for modern life. It is stylish yet practical, making it the perfect SAV for spontaneous adventures to match the spirit of our Jamaican culture," said Bowla.

The raw numbers mark out the iX1 as a sporty SAV, with an electric motor at both of its axles giving it all-wheel drive. Total power for the iX1 xDrive30 is rated at 313bhp and 364lb-ft of torque. This will carry the SAV to 60mph in 5.6 seconds, but it has been limited to 112mph. 64.7kWh of available battery energy not only provides all that power, but delivers 273 miles of range.

Bowla addressed the potential anxiety that potential buyers of an all-electric vehicle may have.

"All EVs purchased through ATL Autobahn come with a home charging unit and an installation package. We will also be placing charging stations at specific locations islandwide with the chargers being at no cost to business owners. There are also several charging stations at the AC Hotel, which is on our Kingston property located at 38-42 Lady Musgrave Road, Kingston 5. Customers can use these charging stations at no cost to them. They can also use the charging stations provided by Evergo Jamaica and JPS [Jamaica Public Service]. These companies are working hard to expand their number of stations across the island so it's easier for EV customers to charge on the go," said Bowla.

The iX1 contains a combined charging unit that supports up to 130kW charging. Charging times can range from 6.5 hours from empty to 80 per cent in 29 minutes depending on the power output of the charging source.

Beyond its futuristic all-electric powertrain there's plenty to love about the new iX1.

"There are many new features in the new BMW iX1, but we think customers will especially enjoy the new BMW curved display with BMW Operating System 8, which means your vehicle becomes your active partner in communication. This model also boasts the new floating centre console with convenient controls which embodies the modern elegance of the BMW X1."
