Culture Dan’s funeral on Sept 18
The thanksgiving service for Horace “Culture Dan” Clarke will be held September 18 at Duncan’s Cemetery in his hometown of Duncan’s, Trelawny. The veteran deejay, best known for his work with the Twelve Tribes of Israel, was killed in June.
Culture Dan, 56, was shot at Judgement Yard in August Town, St Andrew, a compound owned by Sizzla. No arrest has been made in connection with the incident.
Sangie Davis, an elder of the Twelve Tribes of Israel, remembers Culture Dan as, “A typical deejay. Him never keep quiet.”
Culture Dan had been a member of ‘Twelve Tribes’ since 1985. Mentored by Earl Belcher, another stalwart of the organisation, he quickly became part of its Jah Love sound system alongside fellow deejays Brigadier Jerry, Sister Nancy and Gary I.
He was part of the Twelve Tribes delegation to the Garance reggae festival in 2010, and toured Canada and the Caribbean (twice).
Davis recorded a version of his hit song, Words From my Mouth, with Culture Dan. It was released on the Twelve Tribes of Israel’s Orthodox label.
According to Davis, his delivery was classic Twelve Tribes of Israel.
“He was very cultural, he had certain lyrics that fit in with the faith,” he said.
Horace “Culture Dan” Clarke is survived by 11 children, and 11 brothers and sisters.
