Tribute video for Kapella Don
Deejay Kapella Don, who was murdered in St James in January, is remembered in a tribute video to his song Times Like These. The visual, a co-production between Cocojamz Musik and Cymbaliic Production, is being released today.
Times Like These was released in July 2021 during the period of prolific recording for Kapella Don who was 28 years old when he was shot and killed in the community of Montpelier.
The video launches what is expected to be a series of unreleased songs by the Ocho Rios-born artiste whose best-known singles were God’s Mercy and Bad Breed Badness.
Born Javon Willie, Kapella Don was part of a thriving dancehall movement in Montego Bay that included flamboyant artistes Tommy Lee Sparta, Rygin King and Teejay. He grew up in Cambridge, one of several troubled areas in Montego Bay.
Kapella Don was never afraid to recall his tough childhood. He said his father died when he was two years old while his mother died when he was 17 years old; the aspiring deejay had several brushes with the law before pursuing music full-time.
Balenciaga, one of Kapella Don’s unreleased songs, is expected to be out by June.
