    Zen Bowls @ 22 Barbican

My neighbour, Sasha Ward, told me about her new go-to spot for daily wellness bowls as she gets ready to play mas. I decided to check out the spot after a recent Pilates class.

The owner Mark Wright greeted us and we settled in to learn a little about him and his new location. “Zen Bowls was born from a deep-rooted desire to make a positive impact on our island. After studying airframe and powerplant maintenance in Florida, I felt a strong pull to return home to build something more meaningful,” Wright said. “At Zen Bowls, our mission is to contribute to a healthier Jamaica, one wholesome meal at a time. We believe in the power of clean food to nourish both body and soul. That’s why we proudly support local farmers and even cultivate some of our ingredients, ensuring that everything we serve is fresh and natural. Our bowls are free from harmful additives, preservatives and added sugars. We care about what goes into the body just as much as our customers do.”

Wright started the business beneath a tent in 2020 at Kingston Night Market, then moved to a small section of the Ragamuffin Coffee Bar and has, since October 2024, been at 22 Barbican Road.

    About Acai Berries

In a Zen Bowl, açaí becomes more than just a fruit — it’s the foundation of the bowl that balances flavour. It truly brings a sense of calm nourishment that lives up to the Zen in its name. Açaí berries, native to the Amazon rainforest, are the deep purple jewel of the super food world. Often the star of Zen smoothie bowls, these berries bring more than just bold dark purple colour and a subtly tart flavour.

    Nutritional Highlights:

    • Rich in Antioxidants: Açaí is packed with anthocyanins (the same antioxidant compounds found in blueberries and red wine), which help combat oxidative stress and inflammation.

•Heart-Healthy Fats: Unusual for a fruit, açaí contains omega-9 and omega-6 fatty acids, healthy fats that support cardiovascular health and brain function.

•Low in Sugar: Unlike many other fruits, açaí berries have a low natural sugar content..

•Good Source of Fibre: Açaí can help aid digestion and support gut health, keeping you full and energised.

•Vitamins & Minerals: Includes iron, calcium, and vitamin A, all contributing to a well-rounded nutrient profile.

    REVIEW

    Presentation

First impressions matter, and Zen Bowls delivers in a coconut shell – clean and neatly arranged, that reflects its namesake. Each berry is thoughtfully arranged.

    Flavour Profile

Balanced and harmonious. The dish doesn’t shout — it speaks gently. Whether it’s cold acai, fresh blue berries, coconut, drizzle of peanut butter, every flavour complements the next. Nothing felt out of place.

    Texture & Composition

Great contrast — crunchy, creamy, refreshing — all playing their part. The mix of granola, nuts and fresh fruits, the colours, demonstrate care in preparation and attention to how the bowl feels as much as it tastes.

    Nutritional Balance

This is wellness in a bowl. Protein, fibre, healthy fats — it checks all the boxes. Yet it doesn’t sacrifice flavour for health; instead, it bridges the two effortlessly. Honey is also available to drizzle! There is choice of almond or peanut butter for you added protein especially for the gym ladies and carnival girlies.

    Overall Vibe

Zen Bowls isn’t just a meal; it’s a pause. The kind of dish that invites you to slow down and savour. It reflects the philosophy of mindful eating and delivers it in every bite.

    Coffee

We started the journey with coffee as they serve both coffee and tea. My friend Sonia Tomlinson, the coffee connoisseur gave the fresh Blue Mountain brew a positive nod. I didn’t miss the milk

    Decor

    Cool, laid-back and inviting.

    Staff

The bowls were meticulously prepared by Davy Ann Lecky. There is take out of course and you can call beforehand to order and pick-up.
