Briana Williams misses out on 100m chance at Commonwealth Games
BIRMINGHAM, England – Jamaica’s track and field officials received clearance for Briana Williams to compete at the Commonwealth Games early Monday morning, but the sprinter will miss out on the 100m as the earliest flight available would only get her into Birmingham on Tuesday morning.
The first round of the women’s 100m will take place at 12:15pm on Tuesday at the Alexander Stadium.
Williams had originally indicated that she would not be available for the Commonwealth Games and was not registered, necessitating the need for clearance from the Commonwealth Games Federation.
Jamaica will be represented by Elaine Thompson-Herah, Natalliah Whyte and Remona Burchell.
The management team was hoping to bring in Williams as a replacement for Kemba Nelson, who became unavailable after arriving in Birmingham.
World 100m champion Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce was spotted at the Athletes’ Village but is in Birmingham to continue her preparation for the remainder of the season with her coach Reynaldo Walcott, who is at the Games with several on the Jamaican team, including Rachid Broadbell, Rushell Clayton and Conroy Jones.
Team manager Ludlow Watts confirmed that Fraser-Pryce had indicated that she would not be available for the Commonwealth Games and is not registered to compete here.
