Five superstitions for a prosperous 2023
Superstitions are a big part of Jamaica’s cultural identity and, with the new year fast approaching, there are a number of do’s and don’ts that have been passed down through generations, to ensure a prosperous year.
The OBSERVER ONLINE team has compiled a list of five well-known superstitions around ringing in the new year. Follow them— or don’t— and see how your 2023 will be affected.
1. Don’t let the New Year catch you in a gambling house
There are more losses than wins that usually occur in a gambling house, so the belief is that if the new year rolls around and you are in one of these places — worse if you are losing— financial losses will be on the cards for the rest of your year.
2. Don’t let the New Year catch you broke or without money in your pockets
This superstition is another warning. If you have no money when the clock strikes 12 at midnight, this will set a precedent for the next 12 months of the year. This will hamper plans of advancement and make for a year filled with failures.
3. Don’t let the New Year catch you at people’s yards
Being at someone else’s house for the New Year could spell trouble for you and bring on a bout of bad luck that is not even yours! While OBSERVER ONLINE does not think this applies to family members’ homes, let us err on the side of caution.
4. Greet the New Year with joy
Now this is an easy one to follow because most people are usually happy and grateful to have lived to see another year. Crying on New Year’s Day however will herald a year of sadness. Let us avoid this as much as possible.
5. Let the New Year catch you in church
Be in church at midnight to receive some extra blessings that will go forth and make your year a prosperous one where plans and expectations come to fruition.
While there is no proof that following these superstitions will affect your year negatively or positively, we can all use a little extra luck as we take on 2023 and the challenges that may come.
