Jackson, Parchment and van Niekirk confirmed for Racers Grand Prix
KINGSTON, Jamaica— World Championships 200m gold medallist Shericka Jackson, Olympic champion Hansle Parchment and 400m world record holder Wayde van Niekerk are the first major stars to be confirmed for the Racers Grand Prix which is set to make a return to the local track and field calendar in early June.
Glen Mills, chairman of the organising committee told OBSERVER ONLINE on Tuesday that the trio had been confirmed, adding that “several more names to be announced shortly.”
It was reported earlier that the meet— that had its first staging in 2016— was set to make a return after a three-year absence since its cancellation in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Mills had told OBSERVER ONLINE earlier this year that organisers are already in discussions with some of the biggest names in international athletics, and underlined the importance of the meet to athletes in Jamaica and across the region.
“The members of the Racers organising committee and the Racers club are excited to once again have the opportunity to stage top-class athletic competition in Jamaica once more,” Mills stated in a recent interview.
