Market Bag: Brace for higher food prices, say vendors
KINGSTON, Jamaica – Brace for higher prices at the Coronation Market.
Vendors issued the warning to customers on Thursday during OBSERVER ONLINE’s weekly visit to the facility.
“Sweet pepper up, onion up, carrot going up…,” popular vendor Richard said.
“It’s planting time now, the reaping ah done… straight from now to August, certain food in the market will be very expensive,” he explained.
Onion and sweet pepper prices are up by $50 to $250 a pound and $200 a pound, respectively, this week; while carrot is up by $40 to $140 a pound.
However, tomato prices are down relative to last week by $20 to $80 per pound.
OBSERVER ONLINE reporter Kelsey Thomas went to the downtown Kingston market with a budget of $2,500 this week. Check out what she could afford.
