Veterans Fraser-Pryce, Dacres to lead team Jamaica at Budapest 2023
KINGSTON, Jamaica- Sprinting icon Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce and discus thrower Fedrick Dacres have been named as co-captains of Jamaica’s team to the World Athletics Championships in Budapest, Hungary.
Fraser-Pryce, 36, the five-time world 100m champion is likely competing in her last World Athletics Championships and will be looking to extend her gold medal record in the event when she gets her campaign going on Sunday at 5:10 am.
Dacres, who won the silver medal in the discus at the 2019 instalment of the championships, is competing in his fourth World Athletics Championships after also making the final in 2015 and 2017, finishing seventh and fourth respectively.
The 29-year-old is still trying to get back to his best after recovering from multiple surgeries and will be looking to improve on his 68.57m season best. Dacres will feature in discus qualifying at 12:09 pm on Saturday.
Sixty-five athletes are in Budapest representing the country at the 19th edition of the championships.
Jamaica won 10 medals (2 gold, 7 silver, 1 bronze) at the last World Championships which took place in Eugene, Oregon in 2022.
