Young focused on discus after shot put failure in Cali
KINGSTON, Jamaica – Christopher Young admitted to not being happy with his performance in the shot put on day one of the World Athletics Under-20 Championships when his best of 18.13m was not enough to see him advance to Wednesday’s final.
Despite his day one failure, the Edwin Allen High student was able to quickly brush aside the disappointment. Blessed with high levels of confidence, the 19-year-old says that he is okay mentally to continue with his Under-20 debut.
“I am mentally strong. Most people would cry but I am smiling as always,” he said. “I am not happy with my performance at all. My turn was a little bit off, but despite all of that. I am going to rest and come back again for the discus.”
Yong says he is already fully focused on the discus event which will get going on Friday.
“I have to make the finals. That’s the only thing on my mind right now, to make the finals. After I make the finals, I will have a different plan,” he revealed.
Meanwhile, Young heaped praises on his teammate Kobe Lawrence who has advanced to Wednesday’s shot put finals.
“I am very happy for him. Even before we came here, we were talking about how we would have beaten all our competitors and he went out there and made me proud.”
