72 benefit from Derrick Smith’s scholarship programmeSaturday, September 03, 2016
Students from the constituency of St Andrew North Western yesterday received grants and education support from Member of Parliament Derrick Smith at the eighth annual scholarship awards held at Pembroke Hall High School.
The students attend basic school, primary, and high schools, as well as tertiary institutions. Smith told the Jamaica Observer that $5 million was spent on this year’s scholarship programme, with $4 million coming directly from the Constituency Development Fund and a further million from donations. Of the amount, $2 million was spent on providing book vouchers for students.
"There were hundreds of applicants, and of the 72 selected, we emphasised that they must remain focused, and not to waste the Government’s money. We also told the students that no child should be turned away from any school because auxiliary fees were not paid, as I am informed that there are still a small number of principals around Jamaica who continue to go against the Government’s insistence that no child should be turned away for lack of fees," Smith said.
