The four — 14-year-old Manuel Emilio Cordero; Jairo Vicente German, 22; Daralin Pie, 29; and Domingo Abreu, 30 — were reportedly spotted by residents shortly after 7:00 am on Saturday, May 7, swimming away from a cargo ship that docked in Rio Bueno.
The Spanish-speaking refugees were eventually apprehended by the Rio Bueno Police and taken to the Falmouth Public Hospital where they were quarantined for 48 hours.
They were subsequently processed by members of the immigration arm of the Jamaica Constabulary Force (JCF) with the aid of an interpreter and charged with illegal entry.
Resident Magistrate Sheron Barnes decided the men’s fate at the Ulster Spring Resident Magistrate's Court in Trelawny.
The group had reportedly set sail for Miami in the United States and thought they had reached their destination when the ship docked in the port of Rio Bueno.
