#ReadySetRio: Toni-Ann Williams out of artistic gymnastics, finishes 54th
RIO DE JANEIRO, Brazil – Jamaica’s gymnast Toni-Ann Williams finished 54th and was eliminated from the individual event tonight at the Olympic Arena in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
Williams, 20, had amassed 50.966 points from her four rotations. She scored 13.200 and was 11th out of the 19 competitors after her first rotation, which was the floor exercise. She then scored an impressive 14.100 on the vault and was eighth after two rotations with 27.300 and trailed by the leader by 1.799 points.
Williams picked up 11.533 points on the uneven bars after a small slip-up and a misstep on her landing and was 10th before collecting 12.133 on the beam in which she lost her balance and fell off.
“It happens in gymnastics with my knee and everything that’s going on. I gave it my all,” Williams said.
Williams was the top Caribbean gymnast having finished just ahead of Marisa Dick of Trinidad and Tobago, who gained 50.832 points.
“I’m very excited. There were some mistakes here and there, but overall happy to represent Jamaica and hope that the kids back in Jamaica can see that they can do whatever they want with gymnastics and what they love; and hopefully my performance today can be a kind of a trailblazer for the kids and keep the programme going for Jamaica,” Williams said.
