Captain Fraser-Pryce aims to inspire Jamaicans at Olympics

Three-time Olympic gold medalist Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce says she is very honoured and privileged to be restored with the task of being the female captain of Jamaica’s team at the Olympic Games in Paris.

Fraser-Pryce, who is attending her fifth Olympics, is captaining the Jamaica team for the second time in her illustrious career, which has yielded eight medals at the Games.

The iconic athlete told The Jamaica Observer in an exclusive interview on Friday that she hopes her legacy in the sport will help inspire the next generation of Jamaican athletes.

“It is about representation and representing excellence, and that is what the legacy is for me,” said Fraser-Pryce. “It represents excellence and really just leading the team and leading from the front, giving them hope.

“I hope that I will be able to add inspiration to their journey, and whatever event they are doing, there is something they can take from the story and legacy as well. It has been an honour to represent; this is not the first time that I am captaining the team,” Fraser-Pryce noted.

The 37-year-old, a 10-time world champion, highlighted that she is excited about the captaincy and will do her best to assist young athletes on the team in whatever way she can.

“This moment is special because I remember when I started on my first Olympic team in 2008, and being here is such a good feeling to see other young athletes coming in and the ones who are eventually going to take control of what is to come for Team Jamaica,” she said. “So to be captain of this team is really an honor and privilege,” she said.
