NATIONAL 200m champion Elaine Thompson, the sixth fastest woman in the world so far this year, will clash with American English Gardner over the 100m at the IAAF World Challenge meeting in Madrid, Spain, today.
Thompson, who skipped the 100m for the 200m at the JAAA National Senior Trials two weeks ago, had featured in a photo finish with Gardner in the women's 100m B race at the IAAF Diamond League meeting in Eugene, Oregon, in late May.
Both were timed in 10.84 seconds, personal bests at the time with the American given the edge.
Since then, Gardner has lowered her personal best to 10.79 seconds at the US trials, while Thompson recently ran 11.11 seconds to win a 100m race in Lignano, Italy, on Tuesday. Also expected to run today are American Barbara Pierre and Kimberlyn Duncan.
While Thompson is the only Jamaican woman down to compete, five men are scheduled to take part in the one-day meet.
Michael Frater, Andrew Fisher and Julian Forte are scheduled to take part in the 100m against Americans Michael Rodgers and Diondre Batson, as well as veteran Dutch runner Churandy Martina.
Rusheen McDonald is listed to take part in the 400m, while world leader Jason Morgan will take part in the discus throw.
