Sanmerna Paper Products Limited Corner League under waySaturday, July 01, 2017
Bredda Link opened their 2017 campaign in the Sanmerna Paper Products Limited Corner League football competition, with an exhilarating 5-1 thrashing of Lion Heart at the Balmagie playing field on Sunday.
Nicholas Clarke with two goals, Chemali Graham, Howard Morris and Akeem Burke with one goal each led the way for Bredda Link, while Irvino English replied for Lion Heart.
The two other games played on Sunday ended in drawn results: Henley FC and Cheap Side finished 1-1, so too did Knockis and Duhaney Park.
All games are played over 60 minutes and defending champions East Bank and Russians opened the competition on Saturday, following the dress parade, with an exciting 2-2 draw. Russians, like East Bank, sport a number of Premier League players and opened the scoring through Nicholas Hamilton in the third minute. Kavarese equalised for East Bank in the 24th minute from the spot, to be all seated at the half-time break.
On the resumption, Hamilton scored once again to put the Russians back in front in the 41st minute, but three minutes later an own goal levelled the score at 2-2 for East Bank and it ended that way.
Mark White, the Sanmerna Foundation Limited president, declared the 10-week corner league competition officially opened on Saturday, June 24 to a packed playing field periphery to the pulsating, rhythmic musical strain of the St Jude's Marching Band.
The colourful dress parade added panache and gaudiness in bright sunshine to the occasion with 15 of the 20 teams registered for this year's competition, decked in playing gear, present.
White, in his opening message, challenged the players to play with passion and commitment, but stated that, “We must never lose sight of the main objective of this league in the heat of battle. This is a platform upon which to continue to build a sense of responsibility for a more wholesome way of living with the surrounding communities, and to establish greater camaraderie with fellow players.”
This weekend's matches will see Bushmouth taking on Varma Rangers at 2:00 pm, with G-Unit facing a team to be named at 4:00 pm.
On Sunday Cuba face Lucia at 2:00 pm, with Eurotrend and Lyrics bowing into action at 4:00 pm.
