Champs KC defend perfect start in Manning Cup
Campion hoping to continue surprise

KINGSTON College (KC) will look to maintain their stranglehold on Zone A of the Inter-secondary Schools Sports Association/Digicel Manning Cup competition when they take on Meadowbrook High at the Constant Spring football field on Tuesday.

KC have won four from four and, having beaten Meadowbrook 3-1 earlier this season, will be looking to complete the double.

Meadowbrook have yet to earn a point this season but their only goal of the campaign came against KC. They will be hoping for small psychological gains against the champions again.

St George's College (STGC) suffered their only loss of the season so far when they were surprised by Waterford High, going down 2-3 on the road.

STGC are third in the zone on nine points, and they will be hoping that the lush field at Winchester Park will provide them with the opportunity to play their style of football and reverse the shock result. For Waterford, who are in second place on 10 points, the challenge is to prove that home win was no fluke.

A win for St George's will see them leapfrog their opponents into second spot in the zone. However, a second win over their more illustrious opponents will see Waterford open up a gap of four points, which could go a long way in guaranteeing them a spot in the second round of the competition.

Calabar High will be looking to get over the pain of being put to the sword by KC — in a 0-3 thrashing at home on Saturday — by inflicting defeat on the pointless Ardenne High who they have already beaten this season.

A win for Calabar would help them to keep their slim chance of a place in the second round alive and help to rebuild morale within the squad. Ardenne have lesser ambitions than making the second round with their very inexperienced team, but a Calabar scalp would be a nice feather in the cap for their programme.

Campion College have been one of the surprise packages of the 2022-23 season. They sit in second spot in Zone F on 11 points, just two behind leaders Excelsior High after five matches.

They will travel to third-place Jose Marti Technical, who are on seven points, for a match that will be a true test of their staying ability. A win for Campion will see them create a cushion for themselves while a win for Jose Marti should help them cut the gap and tighten the race for a second-round spot.

Zone leaders Excelsior High, on 13 points, take on Cumberland High who are second from bottom on four points. Campion are an imminent threat to Excelsior, so a win to maintain the gap at the top will be the minimum requirement that Coach Xavier Gilbert will have for his boys.

Cumberland are being chased out of the Manning Cup, and any hopes of survival will rest on having a good second half in the the preliminary round. A win over Excelsior would be just what the doctor ordered.

Kingston Technical High were beaten finalists in the Walker Cup earlier this year and will be expectant of making it out of the first round again this season. They will be hoping for a morale-boosting win not only for themselves, but for the entire school community after the tragedy of last week that saw a student lose her life at the hands of another female student on the school compound.

They are currently in fourth place on goal difference and a big win over cellar-dwellers Clan Carthy High could see them going up a place in the zone. Clan Carthy on the other hand will be looking for their first win of the campaign having drawn two and lost three of their opening five matches.
