Eight World U-20 medallists in CARIFTA Games squad
Eight individual medallists from last year’s World Athletics Under-20 Championships held in Cali, Colombia, including gold medallists Jaydon Hibbert and Brandon Pottinger, were included in Jamaica’s team for next week’s 50th CARIFTA Games to be held in Nassau, Bahamas, April 7-10.
The Jamaica Athletics Administrative Association (JAAA) named a list of 79 athletes to compete in the championships to be held over the Easter weekend at the Thomas Robinson Stadium and will be seeking a 37th-straight team title after winning a record 92 medals last year when it was held in Kingston.
Two more athletes will be added to the team following the ISSA/GraceKennedy Boys’ and Girls’ Athletic Championship this week for the multi-events, a release from the JAAA stated.
Hibbert, who won the Under-20 long and triple jumps, was only named for the latter after setting a World Under-20 indoor record while winning the NCAA national title earlier this month when representing the University of Arkansas.
Hibbert, who also broke the Jamaican record, had won the triple jump at the World Under-20 last year.
Pottinger, who became the first Jamaican to win a high jump gold medal at a World Athletics championships, will hope to add the CARIFTA Games Under-20 title after he was second last year.
National Under-20 100m record holder Bouwahjgie Nkrumie, thrower Kobe Lawrence, sprinter Serena Cole and sprint hurdler Alexis James all won silver medals in Colombia last year, while Alana Reid and intermediate hurdler Roshawn Clarke had won bronze medals.
A number of the Jamaicans will hope to defend titles won at last year’s CARIFTA Games, including DeAndre Daley who got the better of Nkrumie in Kingston.
Lawrence will hope to retain his Under-20 throws double, while Delano Kennedy in the Under-20 400m; Clarke in the 400m hurdles; Jody-Ann Mitchell in the girls’ Under-20 800m; Rickiesha Simms in the 1,500m; James in the Under-20 100m hurdles; and Cedricka Williams in the discus throw.
