Ex-county cricketer Wilson joins Bermuda coaching team
HAMILTON, Bermuda (CMC) — Elliott Wilson, an Englishman who played county cricket for Worcestershire, has been called up as one of four coaches to prepare the Bermuda squad for a challenging round of upcoming international commitments.
Wilson, 45, who is married to a Bermudian and lives on the island, joins new interim head coach Cal Waldron, former Bermuda opening batsman Ricky Hill, and Reggie Tucker.
The appointment of the coaches by the Bermuda Cricket Board (BCB) comes after an extensive application and vetting process for the new senior head coach position held for the past three years by former all-rounder Herbie Bascome.
Bascome was one of the applicants for the post after the BCB sought applicants, but he was not reappointed.
The coaches’ first task is to prepare the Bermuda squad for the ICC Cricket World Challenge League B Tournament in Uganda from June 14-28, a round-robin competition that will serve as a gateway to qualification for the 2023 World Cup.
Bermuda will face Uganda, Hong Kong, Italy, Jersey, and Kenya in the six-team tournament.
The national squad is also set to compete in the World Challenge League in Jersey in August.
“It’s going to be a very busy time for Bermuda cricket with the competitions in Uganda and Jersey,” BCB president Arnold Manders said in a statement.
“Then in early 2023, the Americas T20 regional tournament will be held which will be an ideal opportunity for Bermuda to qualify for the T20 World Cup.”
Waldron, coach of club side PHC, assisted Manders in coaching the Bermuda Under-19 team for the past three years. He has also served as an umpire.
“I am looking forward to the opportunity and coaching development this will afford me,” Waldron said.
