Gold, silver for Jamaica at World University Games
Jamaica won two medals on Wednesday’s second day of athletics at the FISU World University Games when Kadrian Goldson walked away with gold for the men’s 100m and Kai Chang took silver in the men’s discus throw at the Shuangliu Sports Centre, Chengdu, in China.
Jamaica was represented by a three-member team that included female sprinter Mickaell Moodie.
Goldson of GC Foster Sports College ran 10.04 seconds in the final to hold off South Africa’s Phatutshedzo Shaun Maswanganyi who was second in 10.06 seconds and before coming back late in the race to snatch the win.
Maswanganyi who competed for the University of Houston in the NCAA season, took the silver with 10.06 seconds while China’s Guanfeng Chen was third with 10.17 seconds.
Goldson had won his semi-final race also in 10.04 seconds after running 10.48 seconds in the first round, got off to a fast start but was caught by Maswanganyi just past the halfway stage before finding an extra gear to get to the line first.
Moodie failed to get past the semi-finals of the women’s 100m where she ran 11.58 seconds placing third in her race after running 11.52 seconds in the first round.
Chang had just three legal throws, all in the first round, and had a season’s best 61.82m as Poland’s Oskar Stachnik won with a season’s best 63.00m. Algeria’s Oussamma Khennoussi was third with a personal best 61.33m.
