‘I didn’t like it’
Technical Director Neider dos Santos says Montego Bay United (MBU) have to vastly improve their performances if they are to have an extended run in this season’s Jamaica Premier League (JPL).
His comments came after Montego Bay United were wasteful in front of goal during their o-o draw with Chapelton Maroons FC in the JPL fixture at Jamaica College’s (JC) Ashenheim Stadium on Sunday.
Montego Bay United remain 10th in the 14-team table with 22 points, while Chapelton Maroons are at the bottom with eight points. Both teams have played 20 games.
“To be honest with you, I didn’t like our performance today. The first half was a nightmare for me. We do not command the passing in the midfield, and that was terrible. The second half, it improved a little bit, but I am not happy, and so we have a long way to improve,” Dos Santos said, while acknowledging the team showed grit and determination.
“The good thing is that we got one point from the game. We came here for all three points and got one, which is better than none. We have to improve, as we can only get more points if we improve our performance.
“We don’t win games by chance; we win by attacking our opponents, and we have to work more and work hard to get that,” he said.
Clovis de Oliveira, the head coach of Chapelton Maroons, satisfied with his team’s showing.
“I am very much pleased. I am proud of the performance from the team. We have played against a good team as they got a coach from Brazil even though he is a very close friend of mine.
“We have struggled sometimes, but it was a balanced gane. The only thing is our finishing, and we have to work hard on that,” he said.
Despite having more possession of the ball in the first half, Montego Bay United, who created numerous openings, failed to break the deadlock.
Allan Ottey tested Jovell Plunkett in goal for the Maroons twice from close range in the opening 45 minutes of the game.
From the top of the box in the 11th minute, Ottey’s strike was tipped over the crossbar by Plunkett before heading one over the crossbar from point-blank range in the 37th minute.
The Chapelton Maroons did create some chances of their own, but they were also off colour with their final touches.
On the resumption, Ottey was again presented with clear chances, but he failed to find the back of the net.
At the other end Chapelton Maroons also got into promising positions, but they too failed to convert as the game ended goalless.
