Montego Bay look to strengthen squad
TUCKER, St James — Former Premier League champions Montego Bay United (MBU) are on the hunt for players to bolster their team during the transfer window which opened a week ago.
After a good start to the Jamaica Premier League (JPL), when they earned 10 points from their first four games and were unbeaten, MBU have since earned only two points from their next four games to drop to seventh place in the standings.
Club President Orville Powell told the Jamaica Observer on Thursday they hoped to be busy in the window and said they were not restricting their search to Jamaican-based players.
“We are looking for players, good players, anywhere we can find them,” he said.
With Head Coach Donovan Duckie away in Trinidad on a Concacaf A license course, Powell said they would wait for his return before signing players.
Powell said they were in the market for players in nearly all areas of the field, namely “a goalkeeper, two wingbacks, a central midfielder, and a striker”.
He said he was looking at the rosters of other JPL clubs to see if any players were being released who could help their cause.
“We have a weak team,” he noted. “But the coach has been working hard with some success, but we need better players,” he said, adding they had an eye on the future with the acquisition of some high school players.
“We are not expecting these high school players to come in and have any impact, they are for the future.”
Despite the slowing down of the team that has scored only seven goals in eight games, Powell said he was “not bothered by our form right now”.
He continued: “With the players that we have and where we want to be, we are not even close, but, no, I am not happy, but we expected this.”
