‘Next season I have to do it all over again,’ Jason DaCosta
Unlike the jockey’s championship, the trainer’s championship has already been determined, and that has been so from halfway through the season.
Defending champion Jason DaCosta has already been celebrating what can only be described as a stunning victory that will go down in Caymanas Park racing history.
DaCosta, with only three race days left in the 2023 racing season, has so far won 78 races, finishing second on 88 occasions, and finishing third 78 times from 514 starts. His stakes earnings is $87,685,770, which is approximately $48,055,320 more than second place Anthony Nunes with $37,630,450. This is a one-sided championship that has not been seen for the past three decades or so at the Park.
DaCosta stated that he could not have won his second-consecutive championship without the help of his owners, stable personnel, and other connections.
“It is a good feel winning my second championship. It’s hard work and dedication and so it is a rewarding feeling. The hard work paid off and I couldn’t do it without the team behind me and also the support from the owners,” DaCosta told the Jamaica Observer‘s The Supreme Racing Guide.
“Next season I have to do it all over again. I think we have a good formula and so we will just stick to it and continue to work hard and producing the winners,” he added.
Despite the call for more purses, DaCosta believes that the racing product is on the right track.
“Racing is heading into the right direction. There is a nice buzz around local racing and so I hope they continue to build on it and make use of it. Obviously, we would have loved a little more purse money, that’s number one, but racing is heading into the right direction,” he said.
