XLCR look to continue title march
Following Excelsior High’s 10-0 rout of Yallahs High in the Inter-secondary Schools Sports Association/TIP Friendly Society girls’ football match on Monday, Captain Shaneil Buckley says the defending champions have the quality to more than double that tally in Thursday’s second leg.
The round-of-16 game, slated for Excelsior’s home ground at Mountain View Avenue, is set to start at 3:00 pm.
Playing away to Yallahs in the first-leg encounter, Buckley led the scoring for Excelsior with a brilliant three-timer that brought her season tally to 34 goals, the most by any player in the competition.
Destiny Powell and Amelia Johnson scored two goals each, while Cassandra Smith, Tiny Seaton, and Ricquanna Richards also got their names on the score sheet.
“We could have done much better in terms of scoring more goals, but they [Yallahs] started to play aggressively, which kind of threw us off a bit. But we stood our ground and dominated them throughout,” Buckley told the Jamaica Observer.
Already looking beyond the round of 16, Buckley said Excelsior are well placed to win another title.
“I think come Thursday we can give them more; we can score more than 10 goals, but right now it is just smooth sailing heading into the next round, which is the quarter-finals.
“We are very confident that we can retain our title, and, yes, we are going to have challenges, but I don’t see any side that can take it from us,” said the national representative, who leads the Women’s Premier League goalscoring charts with 35 goals for Frazsier’s Whip.
Meanwhile, it should also be an easy passage for last year’s beaten finalists Garvey Maceo, who will take a 12-2 cushion into the return leg as they welcome Edith Dalton James.
Dahila Whyte led the scoring for Garvey Maceo with five goals in the first leg, while Kieba Cowan provided support with four goals.
In other games, Lacovia entertain Green Pond with an 8-0 goal advantage, while St Elizabeth Technical travel to Frome, holding a 1-0 win.
