Young TT player Azizi Johnson gets GK Capital sponsorshipSaturday, February 10, 2018
GK Capital Management Limited (GKCM) has announced its sponsorship of 10-year-old table tennis player Azizi Johnson.
In making the announcement during a brief presentation ceremony on Wednesday, Jason Chambers, vice-president of investment management for GK Capital, spoke to Azizi's successes to date and the company's willingness to support young Jamaican players in their development.
“What Azizi is doing is impressive. It truly takes skill, talent and discipline to be so young and perform so well in a sport such as table tennis. His focus and dedication are tremendous and he should be commended for it,” said Chambers.
Chambers expressed his hope that the sponsorship would contribute to Table Tennis Jamaica's quest to ensure that athletes continue to gain international exposure and, by extension, make Jamaica proud.
Azizi, who is a student of Jessie Ripoll Primary School, will compete in the Broward Table Tennis Club Championship to be held in Davie, Florida, today and tomorrow. He is the youngest player to compete with the contingent this year.
During the brief ceremony, GKCM presented Azizi with a cheque for $40,000 towards his travel expenses, as well as sporting gear.
Azizi is a member of the Supersonics Table Tennis Club and has been honing his skills for the past two years. Azizi was encouraged to play and is supported by his mother Natalie Johnson, a member of Table Tennis Jamaica and a GraceKennedy Limited employee.
Azizi began playing in 2015 and has since achieved a number of titles including first place Under-11; third place U13 — Jamaica Table Association Spring Open; first Under-11 boys — Table Tennis Jamaica National Championships; and first place Under-11 Category — Kingston & St Andrew Association Andre Drykin Tournament.
In addition to competing in the upcoming Broward Table Tennis Club Championship, Azizi has been selected to represent Jamaica at the Caribbean Cadet & Junior Championship in Havana, Cuba. The competition will be held April 2 to 7, 2018. He is the youngest male member of the U-15 boys' team to be included in the contingent to Cuba.
“I'm thankful that I made the team and I'm happy that I can get the experience to go to Florida to compete. I'm also proud to be travelling to Cuba in April as part of the Jamaica team to learn different techniques,” Johnson said. When asked how it felt to represent his country, his response was confident. “I don't feel nervous; I'm just excited and plan to do well.”
