Dana Baugh, BAUGHaus Design Studio principal and ceramicist, has unveiled, and just in time for Jamaica’s 60th year of Independence, a series of culturally specific, celebratory, and finely handcrafted porcelain pieces — each reminiscent of our heritage. The first in the series is their patty plate and Christmas tree ornaments.
“BAUGHaus Design Studio seeks to elevate Jamaican culinary culture by creating functional tableware specific to and inspired by the Jamaican dining experience,” shared Baugh, the founder and creative lead at BAUGHaus, “I have always been fascinated by the tools and gadgets used in other countries around the world that were invented specifically for their cuisine, and have always wondered, ‘Why not Jamaica?’” Why not indeed! “The flavour profiles of Jamaican food are some of the best and most varied in the world; why haven’t we made tools, dinnerware and utensils expressly for some of our more special dishes?” she questioned before continuing; “The Jamaican beef patty is not only street food but a cultural icon, worthy of creating tableware just for the experience of enjoying a warm, flaky, delicious patty!”
No better time, Style Observer reckons, to spotlight and indeed elevate the iconic patty. The one thing that has remained consistently good for the past five plus decades (The Tastee Patty is 56 years old).
