Former ECJ chair Dorothy Pine-McLarty has died; Holness pays tribute
Dorothy Pine-McLarty, former chairperson of the Electoral Commission of Jamaica (ECJ), has died.
A cause of death was not immediately available.
Prime Minister Dr Andrew Holness confirmed Pine-McLarty’s passing on Sunday and paid tribute to her in a post to his social media pages.
“Pine-McLarty dedicated her life to strengthening our democracy, upholding integrity, and serving the Jamaican people with courage and grace,” Holness said.
Holness also described Pine-McLarty, who in 1973 became the first woman partner of Myers, Fletcher & Gordon, as “a truly exceptional attorney”.
Pine-McLarty served as the first managing partner of the London office of Myers, Fletcher & Gordon.
Holness noted that she was also Jamaica’s first woman chair of the ECJ, remembering her as “a public servant in the truest sense.”
She served 19 years at the ECJ.
Pine-McLarty joined the Commission (then Electoral Advisory Committee) in December 2000 as a selected commissioner. In 2013, she was appointed chairman, serving in that capacity until her retirement in December 2019.
Pine-McLarty also served as a director of several corporate boards.
“I extend deepest condolences to her family, friends, colleagues, and all Jamaicans whose lives were touched by her service. May her soul rest in peace,” Holness said.
