Cornwall Regional gets dexterity event boost
THE Cornwall Regional Hospital in St James received a shot in the arm with a donation of $85,000 on Wednesday.
The donation was made by Adam Gomes, organiser of Slide Life: Gymkhana Reloaded, to Adam Stewart, CEO of the Sandals/ATL Group and founding member of the We Care for Cornwall Regional Hospital Foundation in Montego Bay.
“The donation is to help maintain the quality medical care the Cornwall Regional Hospital provides,” said Gomes, who is a corporate pilot.
Stewart said any gesture of this nature would be welcomed by the foundation.
“Cornwall Regional Hospital serves the western end of Jamaica and it is lacking in facilities. Therefore, it is essential to keep it running efficiently,” he told Auto.
Stewart said the foundation, which was started last year, has already donated over US$80,000 to the hospital.
“We’ve received significant donations of medical equipment, which was handed over to the institution,” he said.
The CEO said when he was approached by Gomes with a request to use the ATL Automotive head office in Montego Bay to stage the event, he stipulated only one condition.
“I said the foundation had to get a piece of the gate receipts,” he said.
Eleanor Miller, a foundation member who spoke to Auto, said she was elated at the gesture.
“We are very grateful for the donation,” Miller told Auto. “The hospital needs as much help as it possibly can, because it is the only one in this region that does specific types of medical procedures.”
According to Miller, the money would be channelled where needed most and would be done in consultation with the hospital’s administration.
Slide Life: Gymkhana Reloaded was held at the ATL Automotive head office in Bogue, St James, late last month.
Donations to the We Care for Cornwall Regional Hospital Foundation can be made at Fontana Pharmacy, MegaMart and Rainforest Seafoods outlets.
