Negus takes another ride on the Bicycle Frame
KINGSTON, Jamaica — Guyanese deejay/producer Negus is looking to score that big dancehall summer hit with the release of two new beats in May.
The Bicycle Frame and Bonjour ‘riddims’ are the basis of multi-song compilation albums that will be jointly distributed by his Toronto-based Street Platinum Records and YGF Records out of Ocho Rios.
Tevin Richards of YGF Records told the OBSERVER ONLINE that the success of Bicycle Frame Volume 1 in 2015 prompted a follow-up.
“Volume 1 was successful enough to take the team which includes (artistes) Jahvillani, Imagee, Ashley and myself to Guyana to do shows and interviews,” he said.
Negus, who was born Alwyn Nurse in the Guyana capital Georgetown, is one of the artistes riding the Bicycle Frame. His song is Press One.
He had a popular song last year with Blush, from Volume 1. Devin Di Dakta’s Jamaica, Mouth Badman by Jahvillani and Shawn Storm’s Clean are some of the other tracks on Volume Two.
The Bonjour has songs by Zamunda, Jahvillani, Mekel and Trance. According to Richards, “It is a slow sexy riddim for the females.”
Negus, 34, was raised in Trinidad and Tobago and has lived in Canada for nine years. He also works as a tattoo artist there.
With summer approaching, dancehall producers are preparing to release beats featuring the genre’s elite artistes.
Successful riddims are usually picked and distributed by companies like VP Records.
