Cornwall play Manley for Olivier Shield today

NORMAN Manley will take a 2-1 lead into the second and final leg of the all-island Olivier Shield football competition at Jarrett Park today.

Manning Cup champions Norman Manley won the first leg at the National Stadium in Kingston, despite being outplayed by the visitors for most of the match. It remains to be seen if the Maxfield Avenue team can hold off the onslaught away from home in front of a large partisan crowd.

The Alrick Clarke-coached Norman Manley has a small following, which was outnumbered by supporters of daCosta Cup champions Cornwall in a sparse National Stadium. The scene should be different at Jarrett Park, where a bumper crowd is expected to turn out to support the Montegonians.

Cornwall College have won the Olivier Shield outright nine times, while sharing it with St George’s College once. Norman Manley’s only success in the Olivier Shield was in 1996, when they also won their only previous Manning Cup.

The playoff pits the rivalry of a traditional school in Cornwall against the newly-upgraded school in Norman Manley. The following are the previous winners of the Olivier Shield:
