New basic school for Westmoreland
lAMBS River, Westmoreland – A basic school, with a capacity for almost 200 students, has been opened at Mount Herman in Westmoreland.
Costing $5.3 million, the school was built and equipped by the Jamaica Social Investment Fund (JSIF), and was officially opened last week by Prime Minister P J Patterson. The school is one of several that the JSIF has invested in.
“Since it was established in 1996, the JSIF, which is a government initiative, has invested in over 70 schools across the island,” said director, Scarlette Gillings. “These JSIF-funded projects have impacted positively on the quality of early childhood education by providing conducive learning environments.”
Patterson in his address at the function, appealed for protection of the school.
“Take care of the facilities that have been provided for the children. If you destroy and vandalise the school it will hamper the programme of learning that has been developed for them,” he said.
