Million-dollar repair job for Falmouth market
Western Bureau: The Trelawny Parish Council is to spend just over $1 million to carry out much needed repairs at the Falmouth Municipal Market.
According to the Council’s Superintendent of Roads and Works, Brian Silvera, work is expected to begin next week and should be completed within the next three weeks.
He said the work to be undertaken involves the erection of perimeter fencing, patching of the floors and improvements in the sanitary facility.
Superintendent Brown noted that since the Council regained control of the market in May, there has been an ongoing programme to improve the existing sanitary and physical conditions there.
Meanwhile, he added that his department also plans to spend approximately $700,000 over the next two weeks to improve the drainage systems in the communities of Falmouth, Daniel Town and Hammersmith in Trelawny.
The work to be done includes the construction of curbs and channels and the cleaning of blocked drains.
Brown pointed out that a number of road surfaces in these communities have been in a deplorable state because of poor drainage systems.
“If the drainage systems are not corrected there will be further erosion of the road surfaces,” the superintendent of roads stressed.
And he is appealing to residents in the parish to desist from throwing garbage in the drains.
“People have been dumping their garbage in the drains and this has resulted in flooding in a number of instances. They must stop it,” Brown urged.
