Michelle leaves $100M in damages in St James and Hanover
THE damage done to roads and infrastructure in sections of St James and Hanover as a result of weather conditions associated with Hurricane Michelle, has been estimated at $100 million.
Hanover Parish Council’s superintendent of roads and works, Ainsworth Forbes, said total damage in that parish was estimated at $20.5 million. Meanwhile, Lillieth Allen, the secretary manager of the St James Parish Council, said road rehabilitation and drain cleaning exercises in that parish was expected to cost approximately $86 million.
Both parishes completed reports earlier this week and submitted them to the Ministry of Local Government.
Last weekend, flood rains left several roads in Hanover badly damaged and rendered the Pel River, Kew, Crib and Riverside roads impassable. The Pel River Road was the worst affected, as its bridge collapsed and the roadway was cut in two in several sections.
In St James, major infrastructural damage was reported across the parish, including havoc wreaked on roads that were in the process of being rehabilitated to correct damage done by the January flood rains.
Entertainment spots, Pier One and Margueritaville also suffered millions of dollars in damages as a result of the ravages of Michele. On Tuesday, business owners were busy repairing their facilities.
The estimated repair bill for the entire island has so far been placed at more than $1 billion, but that figure is expected to climb.
