Briton fined for cocaine-filled bammies
A British man, Albert Wallace, who tried to smuggle 52 pounds of ganja from the island inside a number of bammies earlier this week, was fined a whopping $415,000 and sentenced to six months at hard labour for the offence.
The ruling was handed down in the Montego Bay Resident Magistrate’s Court Wednesday.
The 45 year-old Wallace, who works as a painter and decorator, was caught with the ganja inside his suitcases after he was stopped and searched at the Sangster International Airport on June 18.
He was on his way back to England at the time and was subsequently charged with possession of, dealing in and attempting to export ganja.
In court Wednesday he pleaded guilty to the charges against him but declined to say anything to influence RM Valerie Stephens’ sentencing.
For possession of the drug the Briton was fined $15,000 or six months. For dealing in it he was fined $80,000 or six months. And for attempting to export the illegal substance he was fined $320,000 or six months. He was also given an additional six months behind bars.
