Road in East Kingston to be named Sir Florizel Glasspole Boulevard
THE Kingston and St Andrew Corporation (KSAC) has passed a resolution to name the stretch of road leading from the Harbour View roundabout to the Rockfort intersection, the Road in East Kingston to be named Sir Florizel Glasspole Boulevard.
At the corporation’s monthly meeting this week, councillors voted to name the roadway after the former governor general who died in 2000.
The street is located in the East Kingston and Port Royal constituency where Sir Florizel served as Member of Parliament from 1944 to 1973. He was also minister of education from 1957 to 1962 and from 1972 to 1973, after which he was appointed governor general.
In moving the resolution, Councillor Angela Brown-Burke said that Sir Florizel had not only given sterling service to the people of East Kingston and Port Royal but he had also “contributed significantly” to the trade union movement in Jamaica and to national politics. The resolution also took note of Sir Florizel’s “significant impact” on the country’s education system.
Councillor Brown-Burke said that naming the road in honour of the late governor general would be a fitting tribute to a great son of the soil.
Support came from Councillor Nadine Chaplain, who seconded the resolution. “It is only fitting that there is something there so our children will know that there was such a great man as Sir Florizel Glasspole,” she said.
With the passing of the resolution, the KSAC will now provide adequate notification to the agencies, residences and establishments, which would be affected by the name change. Following that, communication will be sent to the minister of local government and community development and the change will be detailed in the Gazette.
