NHT donates computers to
Fellowship Primary and Junior High
PORT ANTONIO, Portland – The computer education programme at Fellowship Primary and Junior High School received a significant boost last Thursday when seven computers, a work station, desks and chairs were presented to the institution by the National Housing Trust (NHT).
This donation forms part of the NHT’s initiative to assist schools across the country with their computer education programme. There are now 12 computers at the school.
Clarendon farmers get agricultural supplies
MAY PEN, Clarendon – Relief efforts are still coming in for farmers in Clarendon which were hit hard by heavy floods in May this year.
The Kiwanis International Organisation has donated agricultural stock and supplies valued at over $220,000 to 25 farmers from about 40 communities within the central and southern regions of the parish.
Among the items distributed to each farmer were 50 baby chickens along with eight bags of feed and medicinal supplies.
Clarendon Red Cross gets new vehicle
MAY PEN, Clarendon – The Red Cross of Clarendon last Tuesday received a new vehicle donated through a joint effort of the Jamalco/Alcoa Foundation.
The keys to a new Toyota Hilux Surf was handed over to Carole Powell, national president of the Red Cross, at a special ceremony at the Jamalco Refinery Plant in Halse Hall, Clarendon.
Retrieve gets electricity
Retrieve, St Elizabeth – Electricity has been installed in this South-West St Elizabeth community under the Rural Electrification Programme (REP).
Keith Garvey, public relations manager for the REP, who was the guest speaker at the official “turning on of lights” ceremony in the community recently, noted that since 1974, a total of 55,000 households had been wired under the REP.
“We have built over 3,000 miles of lines since 1975,” he said. “Presently, we have, in terms of wiring the entire island, 850 miles of lines to be built, and we have approximately 25,000 houses left to totally provide power to rural Jamaica,” he said.
Westmoreland PC clearing streets of stray animals
SAVANNA-LA-MAR, Westmoreland – The Westmoreland Parish Council says it has been reaping success in its zero tolerance campaign against stray animals on the streets of the parish.
With a new animal pound and support from the citizens and business entities across Westmoreland, hundreds of cows and other animals are impounded each month by the council, JIS News has reported.
Last Thursday, Mayor Ralph Anglin, who also chairs the council, told councillors at their monthly meeting that the removal of stray animals was going well in most areas.
Four bicycles given to Whithorn Police Station
WHITHORN, Westmoreland – The Whithorn Police Station in Westmoreland was recently presented with four bicycles by the Westmoreland Parish Council to help the cops in their jobs.
Mayor of Savanna-la-Mar and chairman of the Westmoreland Parish Council, Ralph Anglin, said that recently, there had been a spate of break-ins in the Petersfield, Pipers Corner and Hertford areas of Westmoreland, and the police had expressed the view that if they had pedal cycles, they would be better able to apprehend the culprits.
St Elizabeth Parish Library to be expanded
BLACK RIVER, St Elizabeth – A contract valued at $11 million has been signed for expansion of the St Elizabeth Parish Library in the capital town of Black River.
Construction is expected to last seven months and the work will include the building of a new junior library, a librarian’s office, a board room, a work room, a new adult library, additional rest rooms, as well as a Region 6 office.
The signing ceremony was held at the Invercauld Hotel in Black River on September 11.
592 more persons receive PRIDE lots
BRAETON, St Catherine – Approximately 592 residents of Beverly Flats, Naseberry Villa and Ragsville in St Catherine have received certificates of possession under the Government’s Operation PRIDE programme.
The documents were handed over to the beneficiaries on September 9 at a ceremony held at the Emanuel Apostolic Church in Braeton Parkway, Portmore, St Catherine. The ceremony was organised by the National Housing Development Corporation, which manages the Operation PRIDE projects islandwide.
