Bog Walk Gorge closed
THE Bog Walk Gorge, the main link to Jamaica’s north coast, was yesterday closed by the government’s National Works Agency (NWA), because of what it said was extensive damage caused by rains associated with Tropical Storm Lili.
The agency said the indefinite closure of the road was to ensure the safety of the public.
“There are trenches in some sections of the roads and in other areas there has been undermining of the edge line of the road close to the river,” Vando Palmer, the NWA’s communications and customer service manager told the Observer yesterday.
Palmer said that a team from the NWA visited the gorge yesterday to assess the damage and that the repair costs should be known by today.
In the meanwhile, the NWA has warned motorists to exercise caution when using the alternative route through Sligoville, as there is a breakaway on the road, about 800 metres from Bog Walk. Palmer said that the breakaway had been cordoned off and signs put up. “The public needs to exercise caution as they travel there,” he said.
Junction in St Mary is the other alternative route.
