MoBay’s theatre lovers get a treat
WESTERN BUREAU — Theatre lovers in western Jamaica are in for a special treat this weekend as the curtains go up on two theatrical productions in Montego Bay tonight.
At the Fairfield Theatre, the Montego Bay Little Theatre Movement’s (MLTM) latest production, Neil Simon’s God’s Favourite, begins at 8:00 pm while Interactive Production presents Conman At Large, at the Montego Bay Civic Centre.
Headlining the large cast in God’s Favourite is well-known veteran broadcaster Errol Smith, in one of the more demanding roles of his acting career. Smith plays Joe Benjamin, a wealthy and successful businessman who suddenly falls on very hard times and has his faith in God severely tested.
Playwright, actor and producer Fabian Thomas portrays the curious messenger from God — Sydney Lipton. Thomas’ character and performance is described as “very textured” and the producers expect that he will prove to be a crowd favourite.
God’s Favourite has been linked to the biblical story of Job and the witty, snappy dialogue and hilarious modern-day situations will ensure it goes over well with all audiences. MLTM chairman, Douglas Prout, directs the play.
Prout said God’s Favourite is anything but boring despite the fact that there isn’t any hint of sex or violence in it.
“I can guarantee that the audience, whether young or old, will be sitting on the edges of their seats all the way through, except when they are rolling in the aisles with laughter,” he added.
The cast also includes Norma Stanley, Michael McKenzie, Tricia-Ann Thelwell, Gavin Bailey, Makeda Solomon, Tia Murray, Davina Pinto and Gregory Gardner.
The play will run on Saturdays and Sundays at the Fairfield Little Theatre until December 1.
Meanwhile, Conman at Large features a true to life story of Daphne’s (Stacey Broderick’s) sudden wealth. As she enjoys the finer things in life, her man, Freddy (Andrew Harvey) who tries hard to gain her approval, has difficulty adjusting.
Frustrated, Daphne falls into another man’s arms (Michael Steele) and pays dearly for it. Much is in store when Steele also invites his cousin Sue (Paula Barrett) to stay with them.
Conman will run until tomorrow night and part proceeds from the shows will go toward the Good Shepherd Foundation.
