Solid waste authority probing death of worker
THE circumstances under which Cevis Linton, 52, fell from a crane truck on Wednesday morning and died, is being investigated by the National Solid Waste Management Authority (NSWMA).
According to the NSWMA, Linton was on a crane truck contracted to MPM, transporting garbage skips to various locations. The truck was travelling down a hill on the Elletson Flats main road in St Andrew when he tried to prevent a skip from falling off. He, however, lost his balance and fell to the ground, with the skip falling on him and crushing his head.
A NSWMA told the Observer that its policy required that skips being transported should be strapped.
The authority, which has acknowledged that jobs in the waste management sector entail a high level of risk, said that in an international survey on occupational hazards, “solid waste management came out as one of the most hazardous”.
