Cop killed in St Ann
DISCOVERY BAY, St Ann — Two men, known only as “Roger” and “Spoogie”, are being sought in connection with the fatal shooting of 35 year-old police constable, Colin Taylor, of the Morant Bay police station.
The lawman died in the St Ann’s Bay hospital Thursday afternoon after being shot at a premises in Hopewell district near Discovery Bay, St Ann.
His attackers escaped with the constable’s service pistol, with serial number 245PM29381, and twenty-six 9 mm rounds. Meanwhile, a bag containing forty-six 9 mm rounds was found in the yard where the shooting took place.
The St Ann police, who are investigating, have since launched a search for the two men, in connection with the murder.
According to police reports, at about 4:00 pm Thursday, Taylor accompanied two men to Hopewell district to retrieve a motorcycle that had been loaned to Roger.
On reaching the premises where the bike was located, they were denied entry but Taylor reportedly identified himself as a policeman and entered the yard.
Roger and Spoogie, who were in the yard, allegedly pulled guns and opened fire, hitting Taylor. Both men then reportedly drove away in a white Toyota Corolla motorcar.
Residents alerted the police, and on their arrival Taylor was taken to the St Ann’s Bay hospital, where he died while undergoing treatment.
But Observer sources gave a different account of the incident. They maintain that one of the men whom Taylor had accompanied to the premises was involved in a dispute with Roger when the policeman intervened, identifying himself as a lawman.
At that point, sources said, Roger and his accomplice disarmed the officer then fired several shots, hitting him.
It is not known if the two men whom Taylor accompanied to the yard were injured or if the bike was retrieved.
Taylor was earlier this year transferred from the St James division and was said to be off-duty at the time of his death. He is the second cop killed since the start of the year.
