Cops kill man in alleged warehouse gunfight
THE Bureau of Special Investigations has commenced a probe into an incident in which a man was fatally shot and two persons arrested at a warehouse at Bustamante Highway, Clarendon yesterday morning.
The dead man was identified as Bertram Bailey 32, a labourer of Riverton Meadows, Kingston 11, while charged with shooting with intent and simple larceny are Migel Thompson 18, of Riverton Meadows and Kent McDuffus, 29, mason of Waltham Park Road, Kingston 13.
The police reported that at about 4:00 am, members of a police team were on patrol along Bustamante Highway when they received report of a break-in at a warehouse. On reaching the location, six men were seen.
“On the approach of the police, the men reportedly opened at the lawmen who returned the fire. After the shooting subsided it was discovered that Bailey had been shot. Thompson and McDuffus were found hiding in the building. A gray Diahatsu motor car registered 6005DZ was found on the scene,” the Constabulary Communication Network (CCN) reported.
The injured man, the police said, was taken to the May Pen Hospital where he was pronounced dead.
Forbes reelected
Commissioner of Police Francis Forbes has been returned unopposed as president of the Association of Caribbean Commissioners of Police (ACCP) at its 18th Annual General Meeting now on in Bermuda. His previous election to the post was by unanimous vote.
The conference commenced on May 22 and will conclude today.
Commissioner Forbes left the Island for the conference on May 20 and is expected to return to Jamaica today.
Radioactive machines stolen
Two Troxlers Nuclear Gauge machines, which are said to be highly radioactive have been stolen from the Bosung Engineering and Construction Ltd Laboratory in Lucea, Hanover, the police said.
The CCN liaison officer for Hanover reported that between February 1 and April 22 thieves broke into the company’s laboratory and stole the two machines. The machines, which were said to be malfunctioning, are yellow in colour and bear serial number 27892 and 29018, respectively.
The public has, in the meantime, been advised to be on the alert as the machines are highly radioactive and pose great danger to human life.
