Women’s Centre gets TV, microwave
SAVANNA-LA-MAR, Westmoreland — The Westmoreland chapter of the National Association for Hairdressers and Cosmetologists (NAHC) recently donated a television and a microwave, valued at $25,000, to the Savanna-la-mar Women’s Centre.
The Westmoreland chapter last year adopted the centre as their charity and has been making regular contributions to the facility since then.
According to centre administrator, Reverend Joyce Bernard, the latest donations were timely.
“As for the microwave,” she said, “it is more than welcome because the days of leaving the food we need to keep warm in the car are over.”
The television set and microwave were bought from funds the chapter raised through the staging of a concert in May this year.
The Women’s Centre caters to young pregnant girls, particularly those who become pregnant while still in school.
The centre provides therapy and education. They are later reintegrated into the regular school system, and are quite often successful in CXC examinations.
In addition to the Women’s Centre, there is a male centre which targets slow male learners and school dropouts. These males are taught English Language and Mathematics in the evenings at the Women Centre’s.
