Infant drowns in pit latrine
SAVANNA-LA-MAR, Westmoreland — The lifeless body of three year-old Kenesha Whyte was fished from an uncovered pit latrine at a relative’s home this week.
Little Kenesha, who is of Seaton Crescent in Savanna-la-mar, reportedly went to visit the home of her aunt, Christine Stewart, at Wharf Road in Smithfield on Thursday.
While playing in the yard at about 2:30 pm she is alleged to have fallen into the uncovered pit and drowned before help could reach her.
Her body was removed from the murky depths of the six-foot pit an hour later, by a rescue team from the Savanna-la-mar fire department, and taken to the Savanna-la-mar hospital where she was pronounced dead.
She was later removed to Doyley’s Funeral Home for a postmortem examination that is scheduled for next Wednesday.
Meanwhile, her family is trying to come to grips with her passing.
“She always have her hand in my bosom,” her distraught mother, Natasha Jones, told the Observer.
The deceased’s grandfather, Hopeton Jones, was in shock up to the time he saw the body. “Mi never believe until mi go at the hospital…mi nuh eat no food from last night cause mi love the little girl so tell,” he said. “As yuh hear mi come in, a inna mi lap she deh.”
