Vybz Kartel free on $100,000 bail
Popular dancehall deejay, Vybz Kartel, the man at the centre of the onstage brawl which precipitated a premature end to the ‘Sting” Boxing Day concert, was yesterday granted bail in the sum of $100,000.
The Deejay, real name Adidja Palmer, will face the court on January 13 to answer charges of illegal possession of ammunition and assault, police and his manager confirmed.
Vybz Kartel, sporting sunglasses, left the Central Police station lock-up yesterday afternoon wearing a big smile and making victory signs to a large crowd which gathered outside the station in downtown Kingston. After acknowledging the cheers of some in the crowd, he drove off in an SUV.
Supported by his mother, he told the fans he would go to court to prove that he was innocent of all charges.
The entertainer, who was arrested by police after his highly publicised scuffle with fellow DJ, Ninja Man, at Sting, did not face an identification parade which was scheduled yesterday, as police pursued investigations into murder and shooting allegations against him and his entourage.
The Sunday Observer understands that the DJ’s legal counsel protested the holding of the ID parade on the grounds that the entertainer is a popular member of the society.
However, Corporal Williams of the Constabulary Communication Network, information arm of the police force, told the newspaper that the ID parade was cancelled because “apparently no witnesses turned up”.
Two of three members of Vybz Kartel’s entourage who had been arrested along with him were released earlier in the week. And yesterday the remaining member, Anthony Wright, was also granted bail in the amount of $30,000.
